Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

An unusual little venture aiming to create a quality fast-food outlet, Wannaburger is packed full of teenagers, students and people looking for a quick bite to eat. With burgers made on the premises, the fluffiest buns about, and a selection of quality hotdogs all sold at fast-food prizes, it’s easy to see why people keep coming back. Try grabbing a booth in this brightly lit red and white themed American-style joint after a shopping trip or for lunch with the kids. Bottomless cups of coffee and soft drinks will delight those seeking value, while beer from local brewery West (disguised as Wannabeer), homemade relish and barbecue sauce will satisfy customers looking for a little more than a basic burger. There’s a good choice of veggie burgers too, although a hastily put together bean burger quickly falls apart. Customers with a sweet tooth will definitely want to try the rich homemade chocolate brownie, accompanied by snow-white ice-cream.

  • High point: Good quality fast-food at fast-food prices
  • Low point: Bright lighting is a bit stark when looking to enjoy a beer and burger in the evening
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 2
  • Provides: Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Pop, American sports on the TV
  • Capacity: 60
  • Open since: 2007
  • BYOB: £2 corkage (wine only)

Have to disagree with the most recent poster. The thing that set Wannaburger apart for me was the little touches like cutlery and plates.

We really enjoyed our first visit, but since then a repeat visit for burgers was a pale imitation of our first time here.

Recently I had breakfast and to say this was a let down would be an understatement.

Dry bacon, average scrambled eggs and OK toast, but the worst thing was the portion size which seems to have shrunk alarmingly. I wasn't aware I'd asked for a child's portion.

Given the vast competition for eating out in Edinburgh I'm always amazed when places that started out well change for the worse and don't appear to realise or seem too bothered about it.

I'm afraid Wannaburger have lost one more customer for good.

It's a shame, as this place has so much potential.

I have been to Wannaburger before and after it's revamp and I actually prefer it to before.
This is how burgers should be, you don't need knives, forks or plates to enjoy one.
The food and drinks are fantastic and inexpensive.
It is now a fast food joint, but a good one. Good quality and tasty ingredients that actually fill you up!
For burgers I come here, I don't want cheap nasty crap from McDs or other chains, but equally I don't want to spend a fortune and be looked at funny for using my hands to eat a burger.

Like my fellow reviewer I was disappointed by Wannaburger's makeover. We visited in November 2010, promising my Dad a proper burger in a retro setting. What we found was a damp squib in comparison: thin, pale looking burgers, a bare scraping of cheese and a sorry looking piece of limp lettuce. Not to mention decor that wouldn't look out of place in other well known high street 'resturants'. My Dad, bless him, still tucked into his burger but I felt cheated by the experience. The only good bit was the chocolate milkshake but I'd rather have it from an old fashioned diner glass anyday.

BEWARE! Wannaburger has revamped more than its decor, and ruined its raison d'etre - burgers. Gone are the luscious burgers; now only 1cm thick. Though you can have a double burger ... sound familiar? It's not the only way they've tried to copy McDonalds or Burger King. Everything is now served in paper or cardboard, regardless of whether you sit in or out. It's counter service, not table service. They are trying to make a virtue of the fact it's now cheaper and faster, but if that was what you were after you may as well go round the corner to McDonalds who remain cheaper and faster still.

RIP true Wannaburger.

I grudgingly still have to give it a star for its milkshakes, but drinking from a McDonald's-style paper cup - not even their old clear takeaway cups - just isn't the same.
