We recently ate in this restaurant with a groupon deal we had purchased. We should have just bought microwave meals. We were greeted after standing at the door for some time by a waiter who pointed at a table and walking away, leaving us puzzled as to which table. We were handed a cheap laminated menu and not even offered a drink. After trying to figure out the menu we ordered our two courses. We both started with garlic mushrooms, and boy was this a let down and a half. A plate of sliced mushrooms(possibly tinned) in water and oil more like a broth was served to us with a soggy half slice of bread thrown on top, it was one if the worst dishes we have ever eaten. We just burst into laughter at the site of this dish. After eventually getting a waiters attention our plates were removed. I popped down to toilet after this, which was tricky to find asIt was to labeled on any door, after guessing a door I walk down a stair well littered with pictures, I them believed I had walked into the owners house as it did not resemble a professional premises what so ever. On leaving the toilet I began hearing a cat screech from behind a door as if it was trapped, the screech got loader which worried me for the cats welfare. Service with a smile is not a term that could be at all associated with the staff working in this evening. Our next course arrived, slightly better than before but the last would have been beaten with a pile of rocks on a plate. We ordered the half pizza half pasta dish. The pizza was ok, but extremely thin that it fell to pieces when you picked it up, and the pasta resembled a school dinner plopped on the plate, with pink meat one can only describe as cheap. After this we asked for the dessert menu but we decided due to the awkward atmosphere and unfriendly staff, an ice cream in the corner sounded more tempting. Overall this meal was terrible, and I would recommend that people steer clear of this facility, at least until they get Gordon Ramsey in, he would have more than a nightmare here.

The friendly staff are the high point of this restaurant as the food and decor sadly lets it down. I had to send my starter back as it was inedible with prawns that were off and very overcooked calamari that was swimming in olive oil and a watery sauce that made the bread so soggy it disintegrated. The main was no better! A gristly overcooked steak that was swimming in oil and another horrible watery sauce with peas like bullets. I can understand lower quality if the price reflects it but this was awful. Never again will I return or recommend this place. Plenty of other cracking italian restaurants in Edinburgh within a couple minutes walk of this place.

Judging on the form of the waiting staff and the chef, the Jolly ain't so jolly no more. Our starters were uncooked (garlic bread and unmelted cheese!) after ordering, the mains came 40 minutes later in two lots, and about 5 mins apart. Only about 1/3 full there's no excuse for the poor service. Pizzas were doughy which isn't what u expect from the Jolly and the pasta was luke warm. Our first complaint was ignored, the second at the end brought a 50% reduction on the bill which did nothing to save a chronic night which was my dad's 65th birthday. There's plenty of other decent Italians in town, body swerve this dive.

Groupon Ripoff.
I've been to the Jolly on numerous and have never had a problem; however, if you're thinking about utilising a groupon voucher for them, think again.
I found that they did not stick to the terms and conditions, but insisted on preenting me with a 'special' menu rather than simply applying the exclusions on the voucher.

At £5.70 for a pretty extensive 3 course meal it was certainly good value for money. Service was attentive and decor kitchy kitchen Italian Would recommend it for a good meal out at sensible prices.

Great welcome, the food was great, the house wine was good. We had a lovely meal here, it was reasonably priced, and the music was nostalgic to say the least - Madonna's entire back catalogue gave us a laugh!

If you like Italian food, give it a go!

We live locally and have known the Jolly, Vito (its' owner) and staff for over 20 years. The food is terrific, the house wine very palatable, and the service friendly. The decor adds to the whole dining experience. This may not be the exclusive establishment that some may seek, but you could certainly never describe it as cheap and cheerful! Well done The Jolly - heres to the next 20 years!!!!

Jolly is one of the best kept secrets in Edinburgh. I go to Jolly regularly, to meet friends in a welcoming and home-like place, to cheer myself up after a hard day or to celebrate a good news. Is it just about the food? No. Yes the pizzas are perfect and I tend to flex the menu a bit now- it hasn't changed in many moons so I'll customise it when I make my order (who else allows you that?!) - Portions are large enough to see you through a few hours of relaxed entertainment, the house wine is a must... but ... what really sets this place way above any other Italian restaurant in Edinburgh is the fact that you can feel among friends. Vito, absolutely magic, gets to know you, teases you out of a bad mood and genuinely participate in the celebrations you bring in. This is an honest, wholesome New Town treasure, and if you are not just visiting, one to become part of your weekly routine. P.s. lots of famous Edinburgh people can be seen here especially on week nights.

I cannot believe anyone enjoys this place. Cheap and cheerful? Well its definately cheap but the taste of the food confirms this. Starters are a throw back from the 80's, look and taste awful. The pasta was over powering with garlic that I could taste it for hours afterwards. The bacon was frozen cubes that were full of water. Myself and my boyfriend barely ate anything that was put infront of us. The music - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and YMCA?? We felt we were are a kids party. It couldnt have been any cheesier. The chef obviously does not know what italian cusine should taste like. And for everyone that says how great the pizzas are. Well of course they will be great - To sprinkle some cheese and mushrooms over a dough and pop it in a lovely woodburning oven - what a hard job for any chef to do????????? Dissapointed is an understatement. If you are going to go to the trouble of spending some money on a night out iand looking to dine italian cuisine - in this current economic climate - sdont waste your money and stay clear of this place: Im sure for a few extra few pounds a head you could at least get something that is you can eat, tastes italian, without the kids part music, and not walk away feeling you have been ripped of!
