Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Lying just far enough outside the city centre to be considered off the beaten track, Causewayside is never the less blessed with some decent dining options, of which Celadon is one of the best. The atmosphere is casual but homely thanks to some rustic décor and attentive, friendly staff. The well-priced set menus on offer diners the chance to sample a whole host of dishes from across the menu while the à la carte menu offers up plenty of classic, nicely executed Thai dishes. Sticky ribs deliver everything the name promises with melt-off-the-bone pork covered in a thick red wine, ginger and honey sauce. Lovers of moules marinière will likely be delighted by the Thai-style steamed mussels, which are loaded with lemongrass and holy basil. Trusting to the chefs selections is another safe bet as both the massaman lamb and the Bangkok beef are hearty dishes packed with flavour, the latter served in the traditional ceramic pot from which the restaurant takes its name.

  • High point: Fragrant, succulent mussels
  • Low point: Menu could be more ambitious
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 4
  • Private dining: Up to 22 covers
  • Provides: Gluten-free options, Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Pre-theatre menu, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: contemporary jazz
  • Capacity: 32
  • Largest group: 30
  • Open since: 2006
  • House wine: £13.50 per bottle

good food but not the best I have sampled in Edinburgh. I felt that the tom yum soup was not spicy enough so a more international flavour perhaps. However service was friendly and quick enough as did not want to be rushed. Overall happy with the experience and I have returned for more hence the good rating.

A well turned out local establishement with friendly staff which appears to attract an eclectic mix of clientele you would expect of a restaurant in this part of town. The menu is good with a wide selection of options and the wine list was broad enough and not overpriced.

Starters were hot, fresh and tasty and the Tom Yum soup was equally delicious with perfectly cooked fresh prawns.

Celadon let themselves down with slow service and main courses which were barely warm. Despite this it was at least tasty. Perhaps on a less busy night they would have made more of an impact.

Fantastic food and friendly service in this great local Thai in the Southside. A well kept secret yet only 1 mile from Royal Mile.

One of the most under-rated Thai restaurants in Edinburgh. Wonderfully fresh food and beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend the tom yum soup, lamb shank in an amazingly fragrant sauce, and the coconut ice-cream. Delicious!

Took my mum here when she was up visiting and she made us all go back there two days later!

Great food, incredibly attentive waiting staff and a lovely interior. Just a shame its a bit off the beaten track so more folk can appreciate it.
