The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Set in the former grand dining room of the George Hotel, Tempus tries to strike a casual note in historic surrounds, although the mood and the menu aim more at gastro pub than formal restaurant. The stature of elaborate plasterwork and substantial chandeliers make this a challenge, even though the waiters do look quite sleek in their dark, modern kilts. So too does the policy of offering very little real ale, and none from Scotland, in the bar or restaurant. The menu covers the landscape of Scottish bistro fare, but the rope-grown mussels lack freshness in their lemon cream sauce and pan-seared scallops lose their subtlety in an overly sweet glaze, overcome by the fried Stornoway black pudding. The aspirations of the venison Wellington are buried by heavy pâté under limp crust, but the 28-day hung Ballindalloch rib-eye steak pulls its own weight. Puddings tweak traditional fare, including sticky date and toffee pudding and toffee pecan cheesecake with salted caramel ice-cream.

An example of investing in the fabric of the building, but not making a corresponding investment in the offering and staff training. Whilst the venue is really nice, the food just doesn't measure up with a number of basic errors on simple dishes.
The service is robotic and borderline curt with no effort made to go beyond delivering the very basic offering and demonstrating a 'couldn't give a monkeys' attitude.

this is a style over substance venue. went there last night, sat down a 7.45 and 8.15 was finally seen by the waitress. 8.40 the wine appeared and by ten past nine our mains turned up (no starters brought). no apologies for the delay or explanation. the food was not even that great... considering the prices they charge. they give the impression they are fine dining with none of the add ons that is meant to give. chair pulled out, coats taken. not even willing to give this place a second chance... wont be going here again and dont suggest you go to experience it. Unless, that is, you like style over substance.. if that is the case, go along and knock your socks off. It will be your type of place.
