The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
In a new home or a restaurant, basements have a reputation for being filled with flotsam and jetsam, with just the occasional gem showing up how a well an underground space can be used – Ruan Siam is one such space. While intimate, fairy-lit nooks will appeal to couples in search of a romantic spot, the menu should attract all comers. Inventive twists on Thai classics are underpinned by a proud focus on sourcing meat and fish from local suppliers. Seafood lychee is a bold, but brilliant main dish. Combining the aromatics of fresh lychees with the fiery kick of red curry brings out the best in succulent prawns and scallops. Tord num pla is a tasty, if slightly stodgy, take on Thai fishcakes, but the green papaya salad, som tum, is a palate cleansing delight, with just the right balance of sweet and sour. With a flat 15% off the main menu for takeaway and well priced set menus at lunch and pre-theatre, Ruan Siam is a lovely balance of cosy nightspot and affordable neighbourhood haunt.

TAKE AWAY- I have literally just finished with the most distinctly average thai meal I have ever eaten. This is what we had, with descriptions from their menu - STARTERS- SPRING ROLL GAI Deep fried golden bags made from wheat flour skin stuffed with minced chicken, water chestnut cubes, carrot, bamboo shoots and onions, served with sweet chilli sauce: the skin was so thick it was like chewing an insole, definitely not minced chicken was found inside, in fact there was such little space inside there was literally only a few bits of shredded vegetable in them. TORD MUN PLA Thai-style fish cakes made from cod fillets blended with Thai spices, red curry paste and green beans, served with a sweet cucumber dip, topped with ground peanuts: Flavourless, unless you like coriander by the bucket load and chewy. MAINS - PANANG BEEF- A very tasty curry with meats cooked in panang curry paste, coconut milk and pineapple, flavoured with crispy Thai basil leaves, lime leaves and chilli: Beef was chewy, sauce was watery and bland. GRA TIUM PRIG THAI A CHICKEN - delicious stir-fry with garlic and ground black pepper, garnished with coriander: Again bland, chewy and distinctly overwhelming of coriander MEE Egg noodles stir-fried with beansprouts and soya bean sauce: these were probably the tastiest part of the whole meal. Good amount, nice taste though barely any beansprouts with just a bit of shredded veg. Added to our order was the measliest portion of what I think was thai crackers though they were a sandwich bag size of thai cracker crumbs. this whole meal was distinctly poor and definitely not worth the 30 odd pound paid for it. Will not be ordering from here again.

I just went to Ruan Siam for early dinner with my husband last week. The food was good but the portions are very small for the price that you pay!
The staff was helpful, and the experience was generally ok. We will probably try it again but probably for lunch as they have better deals and 2 courses for £10. The food is not worth spending so much for a dinner!

Where do I start? My whole experience of this place was disgusting. My partner and I ordered a banquet for 2 for delivery. After charging an obscene amount money, actually more than it was advertised the website, our food arrived. After 15 minutes.
The food was vile, tasteless & the meat in the meals was so tough I couldn't actually swallow it because it needed to be chewed so much. I suspect the whole lot had been put in the microwave.
We sent the food back & the manager offered a 50% refund. Which was unacceptable for the quality of the food we had received, however given the managers awful attitude towards unhappy customers, we took it so we didn't have to speak with him again.
A month later this money had still not gone back in to our account. He said it was a fault with OUR bank, who had not accepted the payment. After another call absolutely nothing was solved.
Later that night we received several calls from the restaurant manager of a threatening & abusive nature.
Would not recommend to my worst enemy. Horrible food & horrible management.

I order deliveries from and eat regularly at this venue. It has a great vegetarian selection (and without the fishy taste that is often found in Thai dishes, so I feel confident that their vegetarian dishes are what they claim to be), the food always tastes very fresh, with good-sized helpings and healthy-tasting (ie not over-sauced). For all of these reasons, and the lovely ambience in the restaurant, I find this place worth the slightly more expensive price.

Don't bother ordering from this venue. Although the food turned up on time it was not well recieved. The ingredients certainly were not fresh, the sauces tasted like they were out of a bottom-of-the range bottle and the flavours were significantly lacking.
Having been to Thailand several times and since trying out several Thai restaurants and takeaways in Edinburgh this is by far the worst. I could literally have done better myself. £40 wasted...but I suppose it was worth learning that Ruan Thai are a joke.
If you LOVE authentic Thai food then you will HATE this "restaurant". If only the Spicebox website hadn't been down...

I was there for dinner on Sat night with 7 friends for my birthday, 6 of which hadn't been there. They all raved about the food, the restaurant and the service! I've been a few times before for lunch and dinner and always had a great experience.
I would highly recommend!

We came here for dinner and were quite disappointed. Standard Thai food, tasty enough, but the portions were minuscule and greatly overpriced! The cramped interior meant we were virtually side by side with another table, even though the restaurant was by no means full.
Wouldn't bother going again and would definitely not recommend.
