My favourite restaurant.

The chef is uncompromising in his sourcing, preparation and presentation of the very finest (often locally sourced) ingredients. The ambience is comfortable, the service welcoming.

Do NOT go here if you want unfeasibly large serving of mediocre ingredients, prepared in an industrial kitchen and served with a bolted on smile. Equally do not go there if you want nouvelle proportion sized servings on a huge plate surrounded by an improbable coulis and served by an obsequious maitre d’ with an eye for your tip.

Do go here for the finest ingredients, perfectly prepared in portion sizes which leave you full, but not uncomfortable. The fish and chips are the best I have ever tasted and the bread and butter pudding is deservedly world famous, thereagain the venison is stunning so are the steaks, gravadlax, the shellfish, cheese selection, soups.. Did I mentioned the bread and butter pudding?

In fact everything on the menu will amaze you, including things made from ingredients you didn’t think you cared for.

Try it.

In contrast to the last reviewer our family of 4 really enjoyed our visit, even Robbie our dog was made to feel exceptionally welcome. A great example of what a country pub should be like, there was even one hand pump delivering a lovely real ale which was an added bonus. The food and service were both faultless. The menu was relatively short but well thought out with some additional seasonal specials. There was certainly something for everyone and the portion size was just right for us. Our favourites were the home made gravadlax, the venison and the bread and butter pudding. We'll certainly be back.

The Garvald Inn was a BIG disappointment.
The lousiest service we have ever had in Scotland. The whole experience put us off eating out in Scotland till the rest of our holiday.
Initially, quite a friendly welcome from the owner but when we gently suggested that the portion size he gave our teenage son was rather small (considering the price, it was an incredibly stingy effort) he went off in a sulk. He provided extra food but with such bad grace that it ruined our meal. His wife brought the extra portion to the table in silence and with such a scowl, that she might as well have spat in it. My three sons were amazed and shocked at her demeanour. She would not have looked out of place in the customer service of the old Aeroflot. We would have stayed for pudding, coffee and more drinks but given the way these people made all five of us feel, we would rather have chewed glass. If that's Scottish hospitality, you can keep it.
