Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Since opening in 2004, this simple, straightforward Turkish restaurant has proved to be a popular addition to the Southside scene, thanks to its reasonably priced meals and a relaxed neighbourhood vibe. The Lalezar, a shared six-plate mixed mezze, offers up dishes like firin kofte (beef meatballs) that are a touch more interesting than the standard issues of some Middle Eastern venues. The choice of mains is fairly concise, pared back to a little under 10 options, but that doesn’t make them any less appealing. Kebabs and fresh fish are cooked over a charcoal-fired grill by chef proprietor Gursel Bahar, who served his time at the Four Seasons Park Lane and Sir Terence Conran’s reinvented Quaglino’s. Honey and nut baklava is the natural choice to round off proceedings, while those who value their sleep can forgo the caffeine hit of the customarily potent coffee and plump for an equally-traditional sweet apple tea instead. Excellent little restaurant tucked away on the South Side but with lots to offer. The food, largely cooked on a char grill, is simple but beautifully done. Everything I've tried here - the sardines, mixed grill, moussaka and fabulous baklava - comes highly recommended. It's rustic, intimate, fun and great value for money....everything a neighbourhood eatery should be. Little wonder it's always brimming with a cheery and contended clientele. Casual Edinburgh eating at its very best.

Disagree again ... the mood lighting is perfect and really makes this place (and they provide cool little lights for reading the menu.
If the List inisists on reviewers providing a negative at least come up with decent reasons!
altho not quite as bad as a previous reviewer crititcising use of dried herbs while of course dried mint and oregano are integral to Turkish cooking.

Really don't agree (again!) with The List's view that Handean needs to lose a table or 2; or indeed with the concept of having to include a minus point about every restaurant - what a negative approach; the previousl List reviewer of this restauarnat made a misinformed criticism in the "negative" about use of dried herbs by the chef when in fact dried mint and oregano are an integral and a valid part of Turkish/Green cuisine.
In fact, the interior of this restaurant is a beautiful use of space - in my opinion one of the most attractive reatuarants in Edinburgh - and you never feel at all hemmed in even when it is busy.
And the food is just superb!

We've eaten in Hanedan a number of times in the past few years, and it is consistently superb. The atmosphere is plesantly intimate and the staff are very friendly, even coming to get you from the pub opposite when there is a table free. The starters are good, particularly the halloumi, but the real stars are the kebabs, perfectly cooked front of house on an open barbeque. My favourite Edinburgh restaurant.

I have been to Hanedan several times and would recommend it to anyone.Very good food at low cost. A good selection of starters and mains to choose from.
The owner of the restaurant is warm and friendly and make us feel welcome whenever we go.
