This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
The long-standing Philly is about as traditional as a chippy gets, offering consistently good food that attracts an endless crowd of schoolkids, workers and locals, as well as revellers on the late-night opening. The owners have the neighbouring La Parmigiana, ensuring the pizza and pasta side of Philly's offerings are top notch, too. Fish is as old-school as the menu, with skin on and plenty of bones in a well-cooked and generously proportioned piece of haddock that is a step up from their standard whiting fish supper. Batter is good, retaining a crispy edge, while chips are cut fairly chunky, tinged brown on the edges – though their fritters are a popular choice, too. Service is cheery and swift, ensuring the small shop's peak-time crowds are soon of with their dependable wrappings.

What’s it like? One big road full of pubs, cafés and little shops. Flats are mostly old tenements above the bars, restaurants and stores which go up most of the road. Where’s it, like? In the West End, a stone’s throw from Woodlands and Byres Road.
