Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

From the street Bella Napoli looks like a run-of-the-mill Italian deli, but discerning food lovers know that through the back, past the racks of wine and tins of olives, is a reliable restaurant of some worth. While the front cafe offers casual, informal food, like authentic pizza and frothy cappuccinos, the rear restaurant has finer dining in mind. The decor is stylish, luxurious even, with an elegant circular booth and leather high-backed sofa making two striking design features. Walls are covered with vibrant modern art representations of Italy depicting everything from football to Venetian architecture. Vivacious staff add to the colourful atmosphere. Starters include calamari rings with a mayonnaise dip. Delightfully fishy, non-rubbery rings of squid lightly fried, just perfect. For main course the chicken Capri is a curious Italian option. Thin, flattened breast of chicken flavoured with wine and limoncello liqueur, it is sweet, fruity and unusual. For afters try calzone style dessert pizza, stuffed with warm melted chocolate and fresh strawberries with vanilla ice cream, one portion will keep two diners more than happy.

  • High point: The dessert pizza
  • Low point: The portrait of former head chef Nello
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 4
  • Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Gluten-free options, Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access, Pre-theatre menu, Post-theatre menu, Outdoor tables, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Italian Euro pop
  • Capacity: 80
  • Largest group: 80
  • Open since: 2001
  • House wine: £13.95 per bottle

We went for lunch today with 2 chatty girls and a very happy 5 month old - after 20 minutes the manageress offered the 5 month old a waver and asked if he was hungry - sensing that she was in fact trying to keep him quiet I advised that her actions made us feel very uncomfortable, he was 5 months old, happy, and that there was not much we could do if he wanted to "chat" - she advised that she had to think of her other customers dining at lunchtime, who may complain because of the noise - we advised that we were her customers too- the whole incident did indeed make us feel very uncomfortable, so much so that we cancelled our food order and left - much to the horror of the other customers who asked why were we leaving and had the manageress asked us to leave - so 0 out of 5 for Bella Napoli - we will be advising friends and colleagues about the poor service received today, with a very strong recommendation NOT to go there if you have young children.

I recommend you make pasta or put pizza in the oven, very average food not worth the money. However my real problem is with the management. Bella Napoli advertised a job on their window for about 2 months. My friend is an experienced waitress and barista who is more than capable of the job. She was taken on for 3 trial shifts and was not contacted or paid. It is my understanding that this is common practice in this family run business and I think that this is disgusting.

My family ate here for a late lunch last year and was quite taken by it.
Just about to try it again this afternoon so I hope to be able to give another favourable report on it later. I seem to recall we were pushing it to expect the lunchtime deal but got it all the same which was nice of them. The portion size was generous too.

Like all restauraunts I'm sure they have an off day every once in a while but you WILL want to try this restauraunt again!

My husband and I have been going there for years, we have tried many different places to eat and have found some really nice ones along the way but we always come back to Bella Napoli.

The atmosphere alone is lovely the music in the background can make it very romantic and friendly, the food really is splendid, out of the 200 times I have been there I would say maybe 4 of them haven't been as perfect as I would like but then I know the what it should be like, most people on here have been once maybe twice so don't have much to compare to, also every wine I have tasted has been lovely.

I am very picky, I also have a serious allergy to which is very rare, only about 20 people in the world have it and Bella Napoli manage to cater for me every time even at their busiest times.

One more thing! My husband, my daughter and myself get between us a starter each, a main meal each, 2 deserts sometimes 3, I always have wine and we get 3 soft drinks and it comes to around about the £40 mark! Expensive I think not!

Visited last month.

Had fishcakes to start, good, not great.

Chicken pasta with a spicy sauce. The pasta itself was good, sauce was very nice but the chicken was without flavour. If I had been blindfolded I'm not sure I would have guessed it was chicken.

I have noted that staff in this place have had a bit of stick so I'll just say that the two staff who served me were good. Female member of staff with dark red in her hair was very friendly, as was the male member of staff.

It's just the food that needs to improve.

Bella Napoli is meant to be a good restaurant and I know it is well used. I used to live nearby and use it often when if first opened years ago. It was a place you could pop into for a take out or sit by the window and watch the world go by as you ate. It used to be relaxing although the food never tasted anything other than average and the prices a bit over the top for what it was.
At Christmas time, I met a good friend I had not seen in five years. We chose Bella Napoli because I thought we could catch up in a relaxing place where we could have a conversation between ourselves. I noticed soft seated booths are now at the windows where there used to be a breakfast bar and stools. There was a seat for six but a man on his own who had obviously finished his meal n' just reading a paper was sitting. It was the only free window seating. The booths allow privacy if you're into conversation. We made eye contact and he seemed receptive so as I approached him to ask if I could sit at the other end of the table at the window, a female waitress approached and virtually pulled me towards a table for two right next to another empty table for two. I was not pleased at all as I find wooden chairs cold and hard and uncomfortable and there was no space really between me and the next table. I said there was plenty of seating at the window but she said I could only sit there when the man moved off. But I was certain he was about to say no problem to me just before she saw me.
My friend arrived, we ate lunch on the hard seats, she had a pizza with no complaints though didn't remark on its great taste or anything so it must just have been average.
I had spaghetti carbonara but spent most my time embarassingly pulling out the panchetta from my mouth as it was full of hard crunchy grisle. Absolutely vile!!! I would have complained and my friend said I should send it back but I didn't want to put a dampener on our get together so I just left it. The wine was ok, I didn't order desert as I doubted it would be nice. We had lattes which were ok. But when two people sat next to us, one spent the whole time looking and listening into my conversation even though at one point I turned and stared back. How ignorant! It ruined our get together. I was angry.
Our meal was quite expensive and not worth it. There was no ambience or service. Our waitress never even came back to ask how things were or at the end how our meal was. She didn't care. And to make things worse, the man at our window table we wanted, he left within minutes of us sitting at the hard seats and tiny table and two other people got it!!!
They do not cater to customers here but themselves. You will not get to sit where you want and have to eat what given. They are rude and overpriced. AVOID!!

i have a couple of friends who really rate this place but i find the staff can be a bit off hand. any time i've been in i find the food fine but i haven't bought from the deli or bought wine there so i dont know if its over priced. i think the owners daughter (or other younger female relative) works there and i find her a bit unpleasant, as if its beneath her to work there and deal with customers. After experiencing this a couple of times i decided to vote with my feet and not return. call me radical but i kind of like to be treated nice in the places i spend my money - not like i'm an inconvenience!
the owner (i know this because he never misses an opportunity to get his face in the paper) also eats there and every time i pass by it seems to be very busy so maybe i'm in the minority with my opinion!

Un-friendly-un-welcoming and overpriced.
Terrible ambience and dreadful staff.

Would not reccommend to anyone.

This 'restaurant' is terrible. I had a horrendous experience when i went here for lunch. I ordered a stonebaked pizza and my girlfriend ordered penne pasta with spicy chicken. The base of the pizza was burnt, the toppings were under-cooked and the sauce was tasteless. The pasta was drenched in oil and tasted like a microwaved pasta dish you would buy from asda! The waiter asked us how the food tasted and i simply said it was horrible - he shrugged his shoulders and took the dishes away. The lunch was expensive too. I will never go back to bella napoli in shawlands!!!!!

Been there a couple of times, once to their deli which was A TOTAL RIP OFF! £12 for one loaf of bread, and 3 v.small tubs of antipasti. The second time was for lunch, which was alright, but again very expensive for what you got. The staff are miserable and forgetful. Avoid.

Very Hit and Miss!!! you can't guarantee the quality of the food from one week to the next. The staff can be quite rude at times and don't look like they enjoy being there. Give this place a wide berth.

This restaurant is superb. The food is always excellent. I've been loads of times. If I was being picky the wines are quite expensive and occasionally the waiters can be a little miserable. Its worth it though as it really is a fantastic place.
