Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2012 edition.

Borne by lift from the bright white office block entrance, you climb the last stairs to emerge in one of the best locations for a restaurant in Edinburgh. Stunning as the roof terrace is for a cocktail in summer, even on dark nights the panorama of lights outside is interesting. Inside, red and black décor creates a smart vibe. The menu is unashamedly biased towards meat, with an internationalist take on steaks and game. For starters, crunchy pickled vegetables are matched with meltingly slow-cooked pork belly. Deliciously soft herb croquettes are hidden in smooth celeriac, parsnip and apple velouté. A simply cooked breast of partridge comes with red cabbage and boudin noir, while garlicky quinoa shaped into a vivid green rectangle lifts the baked cod. Though there’s little for the lover of traditional puds, a range of alcoholic sorbets and rich sweet liquid dessert cocktails is offered instead and chocolate ice-cream is satisfyingly rich. For those who prefer a more savoury finale, cheese is served with a pile of wonderfully crisp, wafer-thin oatcakes.

  • High point: Those oatcakes!
  • Low point: Cheese not up to the standard of the rest of the food
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 30
  • Private dining: Up to 16 covers
  • Provides: Gluten-free options, Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access, Outdoor tables, Free wi-fi

  • Capacity: 85
  • Largest group: 90

Tony Singh, chef proprietor of Tony’s Table and Oloroso, on Ugly Bread

Chef's Choice

Nothing beats freshly baked bread. The smell, the taste, the diversity – it is always hard to resist newly baked bread but it’s not always easy to find genuinely fresh, flavoursome products. In Scotland, we boast a small number of artisan bakers but one…

Nice food, BUT: Over priced. Over staffed. Bad service. Wrong orders. Food just warm. Not a patch on other high end Edinburgh eateries. If you want to spend some dosh on nice nosh then better to go elsewhere or spend less somewhere not pretending to be high end.

Went here lastnight, table of 4. Quite clinical entrance more akin to hotel. Was met at top of stairs by 5 staff just standing facing us, friendly enough but not the best type of welcome. The table and setting were great, menu looked good and the food itself was very good, but not hot and IMO over priced. What let it down was the service which bordered on the fawlty towers at times:
- far too many staff hovering about and lost count of how many different staff we were served by.
- drinks took too long to get to table.
- had to ask 3 times for another beer for someone at table, then 2 times = totally unacceptable. At 1 point 2 beers arrived by different staff so there was no coordination between staff.
- my OH was given my meal and I had to correct the staff (3 served us so you would think out of 3 staff they would be able to memorise 4 plates and who ordered).
- our friend was given the wrong dessert (which no-one had ordered). Fair enough the very friendly and efficient woman who took the order apologised, but a token of goodwill such as a complimentary dessert or coffee would have compensated us waiting with our desserts until the correct dessert arrived.
- older waiter literally handed our coats back like in a club.
- appears to be no maitre d or manager which would help run the staff better.

So, trying to aim high and the food tasted great, but not a patch on Kitchin/Plumed Horse/Martin Wishart and better service at places half the price.

Totally overated. Very disappointed.
Felt like we were in the Express aisle. Ultra fast service left no time to relax.
When we asked them to slow down, they must have just kept our steaks in the oven longer! Hence: over-cooked.
Cocktails arrived so fast they must have been prepared in bulk (tasted the same).
Never going back.

I was out for dinner here with my wife very recently and must admit I totally dissagree with these comments above. The food looked and tasted great and with speedy service, the waiting staff we very polite and attentive. The starters, mains & the desserts were fantastic!! All in all, I'd go back again.

As for previous comments, well... you can't blame Tony for wanting to promote his restaurant on TV. Sounds like a bit of bitter jealousy there.

As previous reviews have said this place has really gone down hill. The food is average at best these days and it's very over priced. Its a shame because in the past it was very good.

The really sad thing though is that the service is amongst the worst I have experienced - really poor. The staff are slow, unhelpful, rude and have a real attitude problem. As others have said they can also be very aggressive.

Even worse while eating on their terrace one summer evening having waited almost 90 minutes for it, had to I send a completely burnt burger back to the kitchen. It was hard, charcoal and inedible, back came a message that "Tony says its fine and that's how we serve it here". They then went on to say they were no longer serving food on the terrace and so I could have nothing else - remember this was after waiting 90 minutes! I think we know where the attitude comes from.

Really folks spend your money elsewhere. If that's the attitude of the owner he really does not deserve our business. Edinburgh is full of great places to eat. This is not one of then anymore!

I'm giving two stars because I like Tony Singh and what he's done for eating in Edinburgh. I've eaten in Oloroso before and it was good. I've eaten in Roti and it was amazing (though terrible before it died but that wasn't Tony's fault outside of selling it) and I still love Tony's Table especially but not only on a Sunday. This was a different experience. We were seated twenty minutes late after at least 3 couples were seated in front of us (all arriving later). The food was ok (although my hoggett was badly under seasoned) but not as great as the prices were high and not nearly as fine as the waiting staffs' self of worth. Honestly folks, well done for waiting a table.. rather badly. I left with a steely resolve not to eat there again and will recommend the same for my friends. I tried to point this out to the staff but they did not want to listen. That really says it all. Sorry Tony.

Terrible service, rude staff, overpriced drinks. Wouldn't want to go back again after the head waiter/manager was amazingly rude and unhelpful.

Totally agree with the comments made by Seon above. My husband and I went there on friday night to celebrate my birthday and were bitterly disappointed. We have gone to Oloroso on a number of occasions previously but hadn't been there this year. We won't be going back. The Maitre d' and Sommelier gave poor service although the waiter that served us was delightful! We arrived early to have pre-dinner drinks which were lovely. My husband ordered our wine and had to ask for it to be chilled. The sommelier looked at him as if we were asking for the moon. The bottle was kept away from our table which is fine if the staff are attentive but our glass was only topped up once! I don't think it was even finished when we left. Our starters were lukewarm. My main course was fine but my husband had ordered the barnsley chop so he could have the speciality cafe de paris butter which he loves. The chop was tough and it was served with veg and chips. Actually it was meant to be served with veg and chips but was actually served with wedges and 25, yes 25!! chanterey carrots. It looked awful on the plate and really put my husband off. I enjoyed my dessert of deep fried jam sandwich but it was not of the quality I expected at this restaurant. My husband had the rhubarb and red cola dish but could not taste the rhubarb at all. We didn't hang about for coffee and were very disappointed at what should have been a special meal. We spoke with the staff member on the door as we were leaving and he admitted that there were new management and things were not as good as they used to be. We also mentioned that the same thing happened Roti when new ownership came in and he admitted this also. I reckon Tony Singh needs to look at his business seriously and stop swanning about on telly. As for the guy on the door who admitted it was going downhill- he was the chef's (from Roti in its heyday and now the starter chef at Oloroso) son!!!! Says it all!!

Living on past glories. £8 for a glass of wine. Food barely warm. Desserts were like those i ate at school 3 decades ago. Give this a miss and go to Cafe Andaluz for better value and better food.
