Tower Restaurant
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Even on a clear day, it’s not quite possible to see the other two restaurants that make up restaurateur James Thomson’s local trilogy. What you can see through this one’s floor-to-ceiling windows – and most spectacularly from its fifth-floor terrace above the Museum of Scotland – is the city in all its stony beauty. Drag your eyes away from the view outside and there’s a whole landscape of well-sourced Scottish produce on the menu: hand-dived scallops, oysters, lobster, beef, heritage potatoes, and so on. A marmalade and clove-glazed ham terrine is enlivened by the fierce acid of pickled onion, while Jerusalem artichoke soup is a big, creamy bowlful. A fillet of sea bass arrives well seared, its crispness contrasted with cauliflower puree and black truffle butter sauce, but the roast pork loin is very dry, with a barely caramelised tarte tatin and chunky breaded black pudding among the supporting cast. There’s good news if you like your sticky toffee pudding modishly ‘deconstructed’, whereas dense chocolate and cherry delice, topped with soft meringue, is a less flashy option. Unlike the £300 Cristal champagne on the wine list.

We had a lovely meal for our anniversary, we pushed the boat out and started off with a glass of champagne, we ordered the venison which was beautifully cooked, it took 45 minutes, but the did warn us, and it was worth the wait. The service was good, the staff could not be more helpful. We stood outside with a whiskey after our meal, and the staff brought us out our costs. Would defiantly go back for a special occasion. Oh and the walnut bread was beautiful.

Food was good, but not outstanding. Definitely overpriced for what it was. Perhaps my expectations based on its reputation were too high? Service very poor too. Was so looking forward to going but won't go back in a hurry.

I've been to the Tower on a number of occasions and am surprised by the reviews.

The food is well prepared using great fresh ingredients and does not disappoint. Service is friendly and efficient and the staff are well briefed on the food and drinks.

It’s a more formal setting, but not stuffy and the views are excellent.

"Welcomed" by scary lady whose job was to take you to your table and install your napkin on your lap for you; "Perrier Jouet champagne" tasted like bad tap water; food bland and overpriced (the Arnold Bennett omelette should be called the "Gordon Bennett!!!" omelette); Glenlivet sparkling water cost £4.50 a bottle, I should have had the Scotch instead; those prices would warrant nice crisp white table cloths on the tables instead of scratched bare wood; nice views. Won't be back and will not recommend to anyone. Star rating: no star.

Wonderful views. I found the food disappointing, and wonder if it's truly necessary for waiting staff to put my napkin on my lap for me?

really disappointed at last visit, flavours too delicate to notice, choices of main course not at all seasonal, but staff took comments well. Food 'nice' at best but not worth the price tag. Packed restaurant but are any return visits?
Won't be back.
