The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Very few places attract queues, and those that do are usually trading on being the hot new cocktail spot in town. A weekend brunch at modest, unpretentious Toast, on the other hand, really is worth the wait. A haphazard parade of paintings jostle for wall space, their colour, form and individuality drawing the eye around the room. Regulars and locals tuck into fragrant kedgeree, towering French toast with goat’s cheese and red onion marmalade, or hollandaise-glazed eggs Florentine, while absorbing the Sunday supplements. Weekdays increase the pace as students, Marchmont ladies and business people grab lunch just beyond the hectic city centre. Plentiful open sandwiches compete with warm, homey plates of barley risotto or smoked-salmon frittata. In the evenings, a small but considered core menu rotates every few months, but daily specials add interest. Chicken, chorizo and chickpea casserole is earthy and mellow, while salmon fillet on mussel, leek and potato broth is warming but light. Regardless of the time of day, luscious cakes abound. Toast’s carrot cake – savoury, spicy, moist, and lightly crowned with frosting – may well be the perfect end to any meal.

Toast has really gone down hill. Chaotic and noisy atmosphere due to one very noisy lady who was working there dragging the chairs and noisily pushing chairs into tables. Loud music meant we could not chat. Crammed spaces and everyone kept bumping into our table. What was once a tasty french toast and bacon is now drowned in a sickly maple syrup with mediocre bacon. A real disappointment. Will not be back.

Lovely and quiet environment, and staff was friendly all the time we've been there.
The soup of the day is the first reason to go there: they are never boring nor expected! Worth a try!
Cakes and sandwitches also good.

Well prepared food in a friendly and relaxing environment. The full breakfast is my particular favourite, the only downside being unable to order fried eggs. That said, everything else more than makes up for it. The food is piping hot, the beans prepared in the kitchen (and not in from a can) and the mushrooms not the usual boiled rubbish normally offered.
Get there early as it's popular.

I've loved Toast ever since, as a student, I found it the nicest place to get a bit of peace and quiet and an enormous slice of cake. These days, rather like myself, it has grown in sophistication! If you're lucky enough to get a table on a Sunday morning, you'll find the french toast generous and the homemade baked beans comforting. This is one of the nicest places to eat brunch in the city. The dinner menu is perfect for a weekday supper, with the intimate atmosphere ideal for a date or a girly gossip. And all from a kitchen which is quite possibly the smallest in Marchmont!
